What Makes a Car a Hybrid?

Hybrid vehicles are all the rage these days with every automaker creating plug-in models of popular cars. The Toyota Prius gave birth to the movement with a hybrid powertrain that is now found in the Porsche Cayenne, Chevrolet Volt, and many, many more. Still, many drivers aren’t sure what makes a car a hybrid. Well, wonder no more! We here at Warsaw Buick GMC will fill you in.

A hybrid vehicle is defined as a vehicle that uses more than one form of onboard energy to achieve propulsion. More often than not, a hybrid will use both an engine and fuel tank as well as an electric motor and battery pack.

Hybrid vs Electric

Hybrid cars are often confused with electric vehicles. The difference is that while hybrids still use gasoline, electric cars run are powered by electricity alone. If a hybrid has enough electric capacity, however, it is possible to drive on electricity alone. A hybrid’s range on electricity alone is very limited and largely depends on the weight of the vehicle, among other variables.

Thanks to the use of both gasoline engines and electric motors with battery packs, hybrid vehicles are more fuel efficient than standard cars. While diesel-electric hybrids would be even more efficient than the current gasoline-electric model, the price associated with them makes the combination incredibly expensive.

Dodge Sports Car Concept in Gran Turismo 6

Fiat Chrysler is all about competition and appeal and now it’s joining other automakers in debuting its own Dodge sports car concept. You won’t see it in real life just yet, though. Gamers will get the first look in the popular Gran Turismo 6 video game. The concept, which is set for exclusive release, is a single-seat hybrid powertrain concept vehicle.

Other automakers have already made their mark in the game. Infiniti, Peugeot, VW, Renault’s Alpine, MINI, Lexus, Chevrolet, and Subaru, just to name a few, already have Vision GT concepts available virtually. Now, with the SRT Tomahawk Vision, Fiat Chrysler will join the competition.

While it’s just a concept at this point, there is a small chance that the concept could become a real life model. While doubtful it will hit mass market production, a real-life example isn’t out of the question. The Aston Martin DP-100 Vision and Nissan 2020 Vision have already been made into real-life models.

Interestingly, the last time the Tomahawk name was used was for a Dodge concept motorcycle at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. Even more interesting (and out of this world), the motorcycle stocked an 8.3-liter V10 Viper engine.

We here at Warsaw CDJR aren’t sure what to expect of this new concept but we’re excited either way!

Road Trip Driving Tips for Spring Break

It’s almost here, the season that we’ve all been yearning for: Spring!  And with this new season comes the ever-popular spring break journey – so here are some road trip driving tips.road trip driving tips

Before you leave:

  1. Make sure you have all needed documentation with you such as: drivers license, proof of car insurance, and vehicle registration.
  1. Take your car into the shop for routine maintenance. A qualified technician can de-winterize your vehicle by checking your tire tread/inflation, fluids, oil, engine, and brakes.

While driving:

  1. Make sure you are well rested. Studies have shown that driving while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. If you are feeling tired, pass driving responsibilities on to someone else if able. Also be sure to take plenty of breaks along your journey to stretch out your legs and regain travel momentum.
  1. Stay on well-traveled roads. Not only is this for safety purposes, but also it is easier for rescue vehicles to reach you if assistance if needed.
  1. Drive safely. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing their seatbelts and never check text messages or answer phone calls while driving.

We at Warsaw CDJR wish all of our readers a happy spring wherever your journeys may take you.

New Smartphone Uconnect App Unveiled at CES

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, we get to see some of the most exciting new technologies coming our way from across practically every industry, including automotive. This year, from Chrysler, now known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), we get a new smartphone Uconnect app that has some pretty cool features.

With the Uconnect Access app, drivers will be able to remotely program a destination into their navigation system, get a vehicle health report, receive alerts when key vehicle systems need maintenance, and even locate their car using their phone.

“The Uconnect team is dedicated to delivering services and features that are innovative, functional and most of all easy to use,” said Al Amici, Head of Global Uconnect System and Services, FCA US LLC, in a statement. “We understand that our customers lead busy lifestyles and our goal is to minimize the everyday stresses by providing drivers with a variety of ways to stay conveniently connected to their vehicle.”

Imagine having this app on your phone. Then, the next time you can’t remember where you parked in a crowded parking lot, simply open the Vehicle Finder and see a map of exactly where your car is. You can then select Sound Horn and find your car in a snap.

Or, you can save yourself some time by presetting your destinations before you get in the car. Just find where you want to go in the Uconnect Access app, select Send to Vehicle, and when you start your car touch Go Now and you’re on your way.

Initially, the app will only be compatible with select 2015 Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep models equipped with either Uconnect 8.4A or 8.4AN, but will be added to additional vehicles as the system progresses.

Best Practices for Driving in the Snow

Driving in the snow can be stressful, but it’s something we have to get used to here in Indiana. Thankfully, we at Warsaw Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram have several tips for driving in the snow to keep you, your passengers, and everyone around you safe and sound during your commutes.

  1. Make sure your car is ready to go before you leave: This is important, as you want to ensure you have perfect visibility and that everything is in proper running order. Clear snow and scrape ice from your windows, mirrors, and headlights. Make sure your heater and defrosters are in proper running order, and turn the front and rear defrosters on. Turn on your headlights, and make sure you have plenty of washer fluid before heading out.
  2. Take it slow: This isn’t a race. People’s lives are in danger every time you hit the pavement, but especially when road conditions are poor. Travel at a lower speed, and don’t be quick to accelerate or brake.
  3. Brake smart: If you need to brake, do so slowly, pumping on them rather than slamming all at once.
  4. Leave a good distance between you and other cars: You’ll need a greater stopping distance on snowy and icy roads, so leave enough room between you and the person in front of you.

Most importantly, keep both eyes on the road, both hands on the wheel, and distractions at an absolute minimum. Drive safely this winter!

Back to School How-To: Setting Up a Carpool

Everyone at Warsaw CDJR loves this time of year. We’re still enjoying the last bit of summer while looking forward to all the activities and new adventures the fall holds. You, like us, are likely deep in the throes of getting the kids ready to head back to school. To make the busy fall schedule a little less hectic, have you considered setting up a carpool with a group of neighbors and nearby friends? Here are a few helpful tips in case you do:

  1. Select members carefully. In order for a carpool to be successful, it is key that you choose people you know and trust to safely transport your kids to and from their activities. They should be safe drivers, willing to use the necessary equipment (such as a properly installed car seat) to transport your children. And of course, you’ll want them to be punctual. Let your kids know these are adults they can trust as well.
  2. Set up a consistent schedule. Once you choose the members of your group, establish who is doing what and when. One mom and carpool expert discourages rotating schedules. It is harder to remember who has pick-up duty when the schedule changes week to week. She recommends creating a schedule that stays consistent from week to week even if that means having fewer people in the carpool or having everyone pick up their own kids on a specific day of the week that would otherwise have a rotating schedule.
  3.  Share important information. Communication is vital in establishing a carpool group that lasts through the year or sports season. Be sure to share phone numbers and email addresses in order to contact the group in the event of an emergency or last minute schedule change. Having this information from the beginning will save on complication and miscommunication later.

You’ll also want to share facts other parents should know: how to properly install your child’s car seat, where to pick up and drop off the seat after use, your child’s need to sit in the front seat due to motion sickness tendencies, etc.

We hope these tips help as you set up your successful carpool. All of you experienced carpoolers, let us know if you have any recommendations to add!

Ram Trucks Stand by American Farmers

Sam Elliott has capturing viewers’ hearts again in his latest voiceover, as he reinforces the Ram Truck brand’s commitment to supporting American farmers. The commercial aired during the Academy of Country Music® Awards last weekend.

This time, Elliott is promoting the Next Crop Project in which Ram will donate $20 to the National FFA Organization for every test drive taken at participating dealerships on Saturday, April 26. The Next Crop Project highlights the importance of the next generation of farmers by supporting the National FFA Organization, previously known as Future Farmers of America. Money raised during the event will be used to assist local chapters of the organization.

Ram has been proudly supported American farmers for some time now. Many of you still remember the 2013 Super Bowl commercial featuring Paul Harvey as he delivered his speech explaining why God created farmers. At that time, the automaker donated $1 million to the FFA.

Although Warsaw Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram won’t be participating in the Next Crop Project this year, you can still donate to the organization online. And of course, you’re always welcome to stop by and swap farming stories!
